[ It would be easier, even understandable to lapse back into being just a predator -- but Bucky was more than that. Even as a merman he was so much more than that. He was different from the creatures who were indifferent to humans, even deadly; he'd approached Steve with curiosity and not malice or cruelty, and to see the change in Bucky's eyes at Steve's statement made his heart ache all over again.

He would remind him of this with every breath, and he pressed into Bucky's hand, their blood mingling as he savored the pain, knew that it was Bucky that was causing it. Accepting all of it, because what kind of love didn't come with pain.

Bucky was submitting, and Steve knew it, even when he leaned forward to take it for what it was, mouth kissing over his pulse, worshipful and loving. His heart jumped, fiercely delighted and possessive, and his hand between them slid up over Bucky's stomach, his chest, mapping every inch of the man's body for himself again. ]

Never. [ He promised. ] I will never let you forget. [ He smiled, briefly. ] And you never completely did, right? A part of you still remembered me.
