[ And Steve comes, sure as he's promised. He's been chomping at the bit, frustrated that Pierce continues to deny them both even when it's obvious that they've got eyes for no one else. Even throughout the gathering, all Steve cared about was Bucky, the way he looked at him, the way he cheered him on, bright eyed and beloved.

There is no one else Steve will take for a mate; not when his heart so wholly, so completely belongs to Bucky himself. But he cannot bring himself to urge his best friend and soulmate to cut off all ties just like that, no matter how much he wants to. Erskine had said that he ought to let things play out, to be there when Bucky inevitably needs him, and here they are in this moment, at this time.

He comes to him immediately when he realizes what's happened, more than eager to do the unthinkable with him, to steal him away from the rest of the others and have him for himself. The world is theirs, and despite the terror of it all the exhilaration is genuine. They can forge their own paths together, they can start a family with each other the way they always wanted.

He tracks Bucky's scent easily, and he lopes up to him, heart pounding. Erskine could catch hell for this, but the older wolf had always been shrewd and quick enough to maneuver -- and he was the one who had encouraged Steve to come for this. ]

You came. [ Steve says with no small amount of joy, nosing his flank and wagging furiously. ] Are you all right?
