"Oh. Right." It felt obvious now that he said it, and she felt stupid all over again for not connecting the dots. She felt all the more stupid for the question that she hadn't asked, because asking it would lump her in with the fumbling teenagers that his comment had clearly disdained. What else is there, if not that end point?

"No, I don't have anyone in mind," Jinx replied, sulky and frustrated. "That's the problem." She wanted, but she couldn't bear to settle that wanting onto any of the available options.

The rest of his words didn't make sense, floating unmoored through her mind. Willing to assist. Anything for you. She tried to connect the dots, but her heart balked at associating her mentor and paragon with the base urges and frustrations she'd been enduring. When it finally clicked, she twitched in surprise, eyes wide and blinking up at him. "What? But you ..."

She didn't pull away despite her surprise and confusion. Instead, her grip on him tightened, hands fisting in his shirt and arms squeezing against his sides.

If she tried to imagine Silco with anyone, the figure that came to mind was some curvaceous beauty, a princess or priestess, a courtesan of such elegance and charm that she magnetized the attention of men and women across half a dozen countries.

Someone worthy of him.

Her eyes dropped to the side, thinking now of him suffering this kind of need and frustration, with no one to relieve it. "You shouldn't have to lower yourself to dealing with ..... something like this."
