Who: James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers
When: Spring Gatherings
What: Werewolf ABO AU - Because we said so.
Warnings: Really cute stuff, sex, mpreg
Hundreds of them came from all over the continent, some at great distances to be with their own kind despite the risk of such a vast movement of so many. Humans weren't included, and half the game was outsmarting their technology to travel the fields, through the trees, over rivers, around lakes and up and down mountain paths to get to the Gathering Grounds. They only came together to discuss the greatest politics of their culture, to renew bonds and brotherhood, for some to show off their recent litters of growing pups (some just old enough to make the journey), others to barter their great nephews, nieces, or grandchildren into bonds stronger than scent and pack, a bond of blood.
His entire pack was joined by many members of the other packs that lived in the surrounding territory of hills and fields, an agreeable traveling arrangement where his grandfather conferred only with another aged wolf around the same age on their path. Pierce was an alpha's alpha, a man of greatness to have brought about success of the group through negotiation, trade and fighting when necessary.
His brothers, both alphas, were the fighters of Pierce's particular eye. He was the carrot where his brothers were all brutal stick, and he knew his grandfather intended to find him a match this year, though who and where and when he wasn't privy too. He was simply to do as he always did, mingle, meet with friends, fight to prove his skill and strength and for goodness sake, don't let too many noses under his tail. It was the same old story since he had been shown to be omega. Tail clamped until mated his grandfather told him.
James was less intent on being a bargaining chip and more intent on reuniting with old friends that he hadn't seen in five years. His oldest and best friend had gone away two years ago, a feisty little alpha of the richest of gold, but Steve had no come back and he had been forced to know his childhood friend in memory only. That was the way of the world; not all of them made it to adulthood or lived to their potential. The encroachment of humans were discussions of the pack leaders; he wasn't old enough to care much about it, and humans had never particularly bothered him save for their occasional strange antics and smells in their cities. He knew enough of them to behave normally if he assumed that shape.
Once settled in their usual spot in one of the many big caves that looked down into the massive glade which acted as the gathering spot, he had headed out (tail tucked, yes grandfather) to explore and meet other werewolves. There were old friends, a few with pups of their own to show off, fine strong creatures. One of his old friends had an omega who was far enough along to be humorously round in the belly, and they had teased the pair for being too frisky and making too many. It was a great time as more wolves flooded into the area, making all manner of racket.
He only headed off to find a rabbit to eat on his own and to get away from the noise when all the celebrations were starting. He found and closer to the camp than he would have thought, ignoring the pleasantness that had nothing to do with chewing down fresh meat. If his grandfather suspected, he'd be confined to their cave or sent him. He wasn't missing out on this for some silly old potential for heat; it was just excitement being around so many of his own kind, nothing more.
Cracking open a bone that he held in his forepaws, he licked and sucked on the marrow and sighed contently. He had to lick blood from his black coat, taking special care with grooming just in case his grandfather had someone potentially lined up already to introduce him to. It was better out here in the night. The crickets were loud tonight and the air was warm, contenting him to stay away from the camp for longer.

I'm aware of that, Stevie, but my grandfather has built our pack up from very little. He deserves my respect, even if...
[He had his doubts, and he knew that his status would mark him as little more than a breeding bitch for his first few years. He would be allowed to hunt if he was lucky but otherwise, he would be a prize in a trade agreement. Not like with Steve, he knew who would cherish him for being him just as he always cherished his golden friend with the mouth too big to keep out of trouble.
He sighed heavily and nuzzled Steve back, licking at ears again before nudging at his friend with his forepaws to 'convince' Steve to lay down.]
I know better than to make plans. If I had my choice... well, I always liked the idea of golden little pups.
no subject
He hated the idea of BUcky being a breeding bitch, pushed to birthing new young wolves for an alpha who would not know what he had. He hated thinking of Bucky being reduced to it -- his best friend was both lover and fighter, strong and compassionate and everything that he'd ever adored about him, and for his grandfather to take all of that and reduce it to a single function was infuriating.
Steve settled down at his friend's nudging, still growling, teeth bared at nothing in particular -- he could not keep quiet about this, he would never do that; and he would protect Bucky with everything that he had. He thought of little golden pups, the idea that his Bucky could carry them, and Steve thought of being the proud father, of having a litter of their own... ]
Black pups, too. Some of them need to look like you. [ He paused. ] I hate the idea of seeing you with someone else. I'm going to talk to Pierce. Make him see that we could be good together.
no subject
He just wanted to enjoy his time with Steve now that he had his friend back. Suddenly the gather was far more entertaining as he considered the antics he and Steve could get up to, the team up battles they could participate in, friends they could together lounge around with, how he could now shoo his brothers away with Steve's help or just plain harass them. Ah, it was good to be a wolf with Steve.
He nibbled at the back of Steve's ears, smoothing the hair and making certain it was all clean. He hummed at the returned comment, his tail wagging slightly.]
Better they look like you and act like me. I at least know how to behave myself. [He gave a wolfish chortle and suddenly bit the back of Steve's neck in a gesture of all play.] He knows we would be good together, but we live in the same area. He's building alliances with packs far away from here. Schmidt has apparently shown interest. [It was his turn to growl at the very idea.]
no subject
His hackles were raised again, despite Bucky's efforts to smooth them over, and he makes to get up -- the growing bits of good mood tanking. He didn't want to see Bucky joined with him, to be set aside by him just to be bred, his best friend would be miserable for it, and his heart ached at that thought.
He shifted his head to nuzzle against his, snout rubbing along Bucky's own with a renewed enthusiasm. ] Not him. You can't go with him. You won't be happy.
no subject
He licked at Steve's hackles even as they rose, but he was dislodged from his lounging when his friend rose. He backed off and set all four paws on the ground again, making a show of stretching so as to seem casual even if this conversation made him anything but.
He licked at Steve's muzzle with puppy kisses.] Ah well... alliances aren't always about happiness, Stevie. It's about the boon it brings. I'm... well, it won't be horrible. [He knew it would be. He submissive grinned again.] Why don't we tromp around before heading to the gathering, yeah?
no subject
He snarled quietly, but settled a little more to enjoy the kisses, soft and sweet and innocent, and he ducked his head to rub against his jaw, to lick his face openly, boldly. ] You're trying to change the subject. I want you to be happy, you deserve all of it.
no subject
He blinked at the alpha licks back, a bit more bold than usual. He ducked his head and nuzzled in against Steve, letting the golden alpha lick him and silently delighted with the attention.] No, I am changing the subject. Nothing is set in stone, and besides, I know you're going to make trouble with my grandfather regardless of what I say. Let's enjoy ourselves now because you're back and I've missed you.
no subject
He chuffed softly, before he finally yielded to his best friend's suggestion, nudging against him, and shameless about the licking, the attention that he'd given him. ]
Lead the way, then. What do you want to do?
no subject
Depends. Are you hungry? There's a creek with a few small fish. I found an old abandoned bear den over that way too. Or... we can mingle with the others.
[While he was leaving the final decision, he make it clear that he would prefer that they had more time alone together. He still walked the few steps back to where he had abandoned the soft rabbit pelt and picked it up in his jaws.]
no subject
-- he swallowed, then came up beside him. ] You did that on purpose.
no subject
He nuzzled under Steve's chin and huffed a pleased note.] And you resisted masterfully. I was just making sure you matured some self-control before you face off with my grandfather.
[He chortled and then took off with bounding leaps forward to take them through the forest to the empty and long abandoned bear den. He turned his head to make certain that Steve was keeping up with him, pelt flapping in his jaws as he yipped and frolicked happily.]
no subject
These ones he politely ignored, before he bounded back to Bucky and nuzzled him, the other's glee infectious and happy. He liked making Bucky happy, and he delighted in the way they caught up with each other, when he'd chased after him. ] What are you doing with the pelt?
no subject
They were going to be good. They had just met again!
He dropped the pelt at the entrance and capered around Steve, play-bowing and then rolling over until he could jump to his feet again. He bounded up to and around his friend happily.] Auntie makes things with them to trade with humans or for clothing for us when we assume human form.
no subject
He pounced him again, and this time had Bucky pinned underneath him, his beautiful, gorgeous friend. ] Are you sure that little pelt's enough to cover your sensitive human bits?
no subject
He nipped playfully at his friend's neck and shoulder, tongue lolling out happily.] Just the front, but I have pants you know. I'm not an uncivilized brute like you. [They just weren't... here or on him right now.]
no subject
He turned to nuzzle him excitedly, rubbing his head against his at the nips, before he licked his face, his neck, drawing ever closer and more intimate. ]
I do have pants, too! [ He nipped at his ear gently, then tilted his head when the wind swirled around them. ] Do you think many couples made babies here? I could smell them.
no subject
He nuzzled back, rolling to get his feet back under him as he bent his head to continue to contest Steve's nips with his own, little puppy growls before he rose and slammed his hip against Steve's. Previously a move like that would knock Steve over; now he wasn't certain it would move his friend at all.]
Well, you learned to be civilized, did you? Are you wearing pants now? [Some magics allowed them to bind clothing to them so changing wouldn't leave them exposed.] I think more than a handful have. It smells like one might have even raised a litter in here.
no subject
He sniffed him now and then, and Bucky's familiar little tactic at knocking him over still worked, too, although he was the one who allowed it this time. He rolled over on his side with a yip, rolling over onto his stomach. ]
I'd have loved to raise a litter with you, too.
no subject
When Steve fell over, he jumped up and down in the same spot and barked before pouncing on his friend's back, draping himself all over Steve and grasping an ear in his teeth gently as he pretended to worry to flesh back and forth.
The comment had him pausing and peering around the side of Steve's face.]
...my heat is in one, maybe two days, you know. If your family negotiations with mine go well, you might just get your wish.
no subject
[ Because Steve was smart enough to know that Pierce wouldn't agree based on sentimentality, not when he saw the value in his grandson -- and it made him sick to know that Bucky was little more than an asset to him, born for a singular purpose.
He gently nipped at him, tail thumping on the ground in appreciation at the way his Bucky seemed to play with his ear, as if the years between them hadn't passed at all.
He licked Bucky's face, his snout. ] Is that what you want?
no subject
[He swallowed the threatening disappointment that it would never happen, that his grandfather was set on Schmidt or some other far away alpha in need of a trophy. Pierce had taken extreme personal interest in him as soon as he showed himself an omega, prizing him and even trying to coddle him at times. He knew why.
He tucked his legs in against Steve's large body, still draped all over the other wolf and growling softly as he was licked, nipping back and worrying Steve's lip when he caught it.]
I told you. I don't make plans for myself, not when I know how the game works.
no subject
[ The idea of negotiation made him sick -- it was trade in the worst ways, and Steve had never liked the upper echelons of their culture for it. The other wolves mated for love, had joined with each other not so much for political reasons as it was for emotional ones.
He let him, before he simply moved, pinning Bucky underneath him with his paws as he stared down at him. It would be his right as an alpha to claim a mate, to take one as his own -- but at the same time, Steve wanted to give him a choice, wanted to know if this could be what Bucky wanted from him. ] What if I want you to make plans? What if I told you I could make them come true?
no subject
[Not killed though. It was strict pack policy that mates were for life unless that mate died of natural caused or killed on a hunt. Accidents happened in the lives they led, but wolves never turned on other wolves over a mate. Their long lives and strength meant that most busied themselves with verbal negotiations to avoid any chance of violence.
He rolled with a yip until Steve was over top of him, leaning up to lick the underside of his friend's jaw. His tail beat on the ground, wafting a little of his scent as he growled and groaned and wiggled on the ground in a playful showing, almost teasing.] I would tell you I would only make any plans if I was not a political piece in a game.
no subject
[ And Steve was willing to take that risk anyway -- to free Bucky from whatever destiny Pierce had for him, sure to be an unhappy one, because no matter how much Pierce loved Bucky, it was always because he was a piece he could use and maneuver for something, and never for Bucky's own sake.
He felt the smaller werewolf under him, and he feels those licks, the way the warmth of them burns him up inside, sets a fire inside him he knows he can't quench. This is it; Bucky's the one he wants, and he can't ignore the way he shows, the scent that catches his nostrils, his libido. ]
And if I say you're not, starting from now? We can run away together. Live and start a family.
no subject
But he wouldn't do it. It was not a life he would ever lead. He leaned up, burying his nose into Steve's golden ruff of fur and breathing deep the other wolf's scent, letting it fill his head and lure him.]
No, we will stay and we will live and start a family just the same. Neither of us are cowards, and I won't run away from this. That is my first want and decision. Do you agree?
